Popular open source tool improves efficiency and cost savings for users

Boston, MA – Fairwinds, the leading provider of Kubernetes governance and security software, today announced significant updates to Goldilocks, an open source tool for Kubernetes resource management that provides recommendations for application right-sizing. The updates center on creating greater efficiencies and cost-savings for organizations utilizing Goldilocks and were a response to requests made by the Fairwinds open source community.

Goldilocks uses the open source vertical pod autoscaler (VPA) project to generate resource requests and limits for Kubernetes workloads. Fairwinds has now expanded Goldilocks’ functionality to support VPA-based recommendations for any workload type – including DaemonSets and StatefulSets – providing more coverage for resources in any given cluster.

“Our open source community is at the heart of Goldilocks so it’s important that we listen to what they need and deliver on it,” said Robert Brennan, director of open source at Fairwinds. “Having Goldilocks give recommendations for any workload that follows a pod template specification means that we can now cover so many more controller types, even those that no one has dreamed up yet. We’re really excited to deliver these top-requested enhancements to Goldilocks users, and to further support our open source customers.”

Fairwinds has long been committed to helping users create cost savings and improve the efficiency of their Kubernetes deployments. The company recently updated its Fairwinds Insights software to focus directly on creating accurate cost allocation within Kubernetes by using AWS billing data and quality of service (QoS) control to help with application right sizing. These steps provide Ops teams with accurate and transparent spending on their products in Kubernetes and identify where there is resource waste or room to invest more.

Goldilocks is one of many open source projects created by Fairwinds to empower the community and its clients to build the right Kubernetes architecture. Other popular open source projects from Fairwinds include Polaris, which helps ensure that pods and controllers are configured using Kubernetes best practices, and provides a natural progression path to the company’s Fairwinds Insights software.
