Proof of how lush and full of biodiversity the farm has become

A worm plot at Abonos Naturales

Hacienda Santa Barbara
Total spent = $9,735
Total budgeted 2007= $8,500

Background - In 1999, Rogers Family Company purchased 39.5 hectares of property in the Jaramillio region of Panama. It had been used to graze cattle for the past 80 years and, as a result, was stripped bare of almost all plants. The goal of purchasing this land was to plant a coffee farm which balances an environmentally sustainable coffee crop with social responsibility.

Environmental work - After purchasing the property, the soil was refurbished using 12 million earthworms and the land was planted with 82,200 coffee trees. The farm became certified organic and produced its first harvest in 2003.

Five hectares of the property were also reforested with the same native trees that had been cleared to create a pasture for cattle. Together with the farm's small area of surviving old growth forest, these new native plantings will add up to 10 hectares of original species to be preserved in a natural state (see picture). Total spent: $735

In fact, it appears that the reforestation has also reestablished the water table for the local town of Jaramillio.

2006 - The Los Lajones estate also planned to build housing. Many government and school groups began touring the property after recognizing its potential for environmental education. We also offered educational tours at our fertilizer company, Abonos Naturales, an earthworm farm (see picture). Total spent: $9,000

2007- This year plans exist to build housing on the 10 hectare estate known as Finca Cafelandia Total budgeted: $8,500
